How to Register and Use Grab in Bali as a Tourist
A step-by-step guide for tourists on how to download, register, and use Grab in Bali, including payment options, fare estimates, and what to do if your foreign number is not accepted.

- Grab works with most foreign phone numbers — register before you arrive so it's ready when you land.
- Payment: cash is the simplest option. International credit cards also work directly in-app for most nationalities. GrabPay wallet requires an Indonesian bank for top-up but international cards work for some regions.
- Grab is the most reliable ride-hailing option for airport transfers, GrabCar airport pickups, and tourist-area routes.
- At Ngurah Rai: Grab cannot pick up from inside the terminal — meet your driver at the designated online taxi zone ~400m from arrivals.
- Always verify the driver's plate and name in the app before getting in.

Grab is the dominant ride-hailing platform across Southeast Asia — headquartered in Singapore, operating in eight countries, and deeply integrated into how Bali's tourist ecosystem moves people around. For first-time visitors, it is often the recommended starting point because its interface is designed with international users in mind, and its international payment options are broader than Gojek's out of the box.
This guide walks through the complete setup and usage process — including the airport-specific procedure that trips up many first-time arrivals.
Grab vs. Gojek: Which Is Better for Tourists?
The honest answer: install both. They cover different strengths and you'll find times in Bali where one has drivers available and the other doesn't. That said:
- Grab advantages: Generally better international payment support (credit cards work more reliably); cleaner English-language interface; more consistent in major tourist corridors (Kuta–Seminyak–Canggu, airport runs, Ubud).
- Gojek advantages: Larger local driver network in some Bali areas; GoFood has broader local restaurant coverage; deeply embedded in the local economy.
If you're only going to install one: start with Grab for your first Bali trip. If you experience driver unavailability, install Gojek too. See our Gojek setup guide for parallel instructions.
Step 1: Download Grab
Download the Grab app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) — search "Grab". The logo is a green circular icon. The download is free and not region-locked.
Do this before you travel. Downloading and registering while at home ensures you arrive with a working, verified account — no scrambling for WiFi or dealing with slow airport connectivity.
Step 2: Register Your Account
- Open the Grab app and tap "Sign up".
- Enter your country code and mobile number. Grab's country code selector covers most countries — use the search box if yours isn't immediately visible.
- Grab sends an OTP (one-time password) via SMS. Enter it in the app.
- Enter your name and email address.
- Your account is created and ready.
The registration process typically takes less than 3 minutes. The only potential friction point is OTP delivery — see below if yours doesn't arrive.
If Your Foreign Number Doesn't Work
Grab has broader international number compatibility than Gojek, but OTP delivery failures do occasionally occur — particularly with less common country codes, prepaid-only numbers, or numbers associated with VOIP services (Google Voice, Skype numbers, etc.).
Option 1: Try SMS > WhatsApp OTP
If the SMS OTP doesn't arrive within 60 seconds, Grab usually offers a "Didn't receive it?" option that can resend via WhatsApp instead. This works reliably for most WhatsApp-enabled numbers.
Option 2: Register with Email
Grab allows account registration via email in some markets. On the phone number entry screen, look for an "Use email instead" link at the bottom. Email registration bypasses the phone OTP issue entirely, though you may have limited access to some payment features until a phone number is verified later.
Option 3: Indonesian SIM
Buy a Telkomsel or XL SIM from the official counter inside Ngurah Rai arrivals and register with the Indonesian number. Indonesian SIMs register instantly in Grab and unlock all payment features including GrabPay. See our airport guide for SIM card details.
Step 3: Add Payment Method
Cash (Default, Always Works)
Select "Cash" when booking a ride or food order. Pay the driver in Indonesian Rupiah at the end of the trip. This is the default option and works with zero additional setup. Have exact change or close to it — drivers often don't carry large amounts of change.
Credit/Debit Card (Most Convenient for Tourists)
Grab accepts Visa and Mastercard directly in the app for most international users. To add your card:
- Tap the wallet/payment icon in the Grab app.
- Select "Add payment method" > "Credit/Debit Card".
- Enter card number, expiry date, and CVV.
- Verify with your bank's 3DS authentication if prompted.
Once added, select "Credit/Debit Card" when booking rides. Payment processes automatically — no cash handling needed. Some cards will require notifying your bank before international use; if the card is declined, check with your bank first.
GrabPay
GrabPay is Grab's regional e-wallet. In Indonesia specifically, topping up GrabPay typically requires an Indonesian bank account or specific Indonesian payment channels. For most tourists, skipping GrabPay and using a direct card or cash is more practical. If you have a Visa/Mastercard that processes in-app, use that instead of attempting GrabPay top-up.
How to Book a GrabBike or GrabCar
- Open the Grab app. The home screen defaults to the booking interface.
- Set your pickup location — the app uses GPS to determine your current position. If the pin is slightly off, drag it to your exact location or type the address manually.
- Enter your destination in the "Where to?" field. Hotel names, landmarks, and address search all work.
- Choose your ride type:
- GrabBike: Motorbike taxi — faster in traffic, cheapest option, single passenger only
- GrabCar: Standard car — suitable for groups (up to 4), luggage, airport transfers, and air-conditioned comfort
- GrabCar Plus: Premium car — larger vehicle, newer model
- The app shows the fare upfront — no surprises. Review it and tap "Book".
- Wait for driver match — typically 1–3 minutes in busy areas.
- Track your driver's approach on the map. Driver's name, photo, vehicle plate, and rating are displayed.
- When the driver arrives, confirm name and plate match the app.
- After the trip, rate your driver.

Using Grab at Ngurah Rai Airport
The airport setup is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of using Grab in Bali. Due to agreements between the airport and licensed taxi operators, Grab (and Gojek) cannot legally pick up from the immediate terminal area.
The correct pickup procedure:
- Clear immigration and customs. Collect your baggage.
- In the arrivals hall: buy your SIM card from the Telkomsel or XL counter, verify Grab is working on your phone with the new SIM.
- Exit the arrivals building. Do not enter the taxi negotiation zone directly in front — walk past it.
- Follow signs for "Online Taxi" or "Ride-Hailing" or ask airport staff. The designated zone is approximately 400m from the terminal exit.
- Open Grab and book your ride from the pickup zone location (the app GPS should auto-detect it; if not, manually set the pin).
- Your driver will meet you at the zone. Match the plate number before getting in.
Alternative if you don't want to deal with this at the end of a long flight: use the official taxi desk inside the arrivals hall. Fixed price, no app needed, immediate. It costs IDR 10,000–30,000 more than Grab for most routes, but eliminates all the airport complexity. See our full airport arrivals guide for all transport options.
Using GrabFood for Delivery
GrabFood is available in Bali's main tourist areas and is particularly strong in south Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua). To order:
- Tap "Food" on the Grab home screen.
- Allow location access or enter your delivery address.
- Browse by category, cuisine, or search for a specific restaurant.
- Add items to cart, proceed to checkout.
- Select "Cash on Delivery" or a saved card.
- Track delivery on the map.
Delivery fees are typically IDR 7,000–25,000 depending on distance. Minimum order amounts apply at some restaurants. Delivery time in most south Bali areas is 20–35 minutes from busy restaurants.
Tipping on Grab
Grab's in-app tipping feature appears after trip completion. Suggested amounts are IDR 2,000, 5,000, or custom. Tips go directly to the driver. For standard short trips, IDR 5,000–10,000 is appropriate for good service. For longer airport transfers or a driver who helped with luggage, IDR 15,000–25,000 is fair. Cash tips handed directly to the driver are also accepted and sometimes preferred for immediate receipt. See our Bali tipping guide for full context.
Common Problems and Solutions
No drivers available
Peak traffic times (morning commute, late afternoon, heavy rain) reduce driver availability. Wait a few minutes and retry, or switch to Gojek. If you're in a low-density area (northern Bali, rural areas), there may simply be no nearby Grab drivers — hire a private driver through your hotel instead.
Surge pricing
Grab displays surge pricing (higher fares during peak demand) transparently before booking. The multiplier is visible — you can choose to accept or wait for demand to drop. If Grab is surged but Gojek is not, use Gojek for that trip.
Driver cancelled
Drivers can cancel after matching if the pickup seems inconvenient. Grab re-matches automatically. If repeated cancellations happen, move your pickup pin to the nearest main road rather than a narrow alley or inside a complex.
App crashes or won't load
Force-close the app and reopen. Check your internet connection — Bali's 4G coverage is good in tourist areas but can be patchy in some locations. Switch between WiFi and mobile data to see which is more stable.
Payment declined
Switch to cash for that trip. Then notify your bank that you're making international transactions in Indonesia and retry card addition. Some banks flag Indonesian app transactions as suspicious and block them by default.
Safety Practices
- Verify plate and driver name before boarding. The plate number shown in the app should match the physical plate on the vehicle. Ask the driver to confirm your name — not the reverse (scammers will confirm any name you suggest).
- Use the "Share My Ride" feature. Sends your trip details and real-time location to a trusted contact. Found under the safety button on the active trip screen.
- Sit in the back seat for GrabCar. Standard safety practice — easier exit, more personal space.
- For GrabBike, wear the helmet. Drivers must carry a passenger helmet. Wearing it is both legally required and genuinely protective on Bali's roads.
- Rate honestly. A 1 or 2 star rating with a brief written reason removes consistently bad drivers from the platform. The system only works if users participate honestly.
You're Ready
Download Grab now, register with your home phone number, add your card, and have it working before your flight. When you land at Ngurah Rai, get your SIM from the arrivals counter, walk to the Grab pickup zone, and book your first ride. The rest of Bali follows from there. Also install Gojek as a backup — you'll thank yourself when one app has no drivers available. For the full transport picture in Bali, read our complete transport guide.
