When most people think of Bali, they picture sunsets, rice terraces, and yoga. But Bali is one of Southeast Asia's most diverse adventure destinations. From active volcanoes to deep ocean walls teeming with biodiversity, here is everything your inner adventurer needs to know.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

Bali's most accessible volcano trek. Start at 2am, hike 2-3 hours to the crater rim, and watch the sunrise illuminate the caldera lake below. On clear days you can see Mount Agung and even Lombok. The trail is well-maintained but steep — hire a licensed guide through a registered operator for safety, such as on our Adventure & Sunrise Tour. Check our Bali budget guide for typical trekking operator costs. Difficulty: Moderate.

Mount Agung — Bali's Sacred Summit

At 3,031 meters, Agung is Bali's highest peak and most sacred mountain — its dramatic volcanic history adds profound context to the climb. The full summit trek takes 8-10 hours round trip and requires serious fitness. The view from the top, looking down into the crater at dawn, is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences in Indonesia. Only attempt with an experienced guide. Difficulty: Strenuous.

White-Water Rafting on the Ayung River

Ubud's Ayung River offers Class II-III rapids through a spectacular jungle gorge lined with banyan trees, carved stone reliefs, and tropical birds. Suitable for beginners and families. The 2-hour rafting experience is exhilarating without being reckless — one of our most popular tour inclusions. It pairs perfectly with a cultural morning in Ubud — see our cultural etiquette guide to make the most of your time there.

Surfing: From Beginner to Advanced

Bali has world-class breaks for every level:

  • Kuta/Legian — Gentle beach breaks, perfect for beginners. Year-round surf schools.
  • Canggu — Intermediate waves with a vibrant surf culture. Best April–October.
  • Uluwatu — A legendary reef break for advanced surfers. One of the top 10 waves in the world. Read our complete guide to Bali's best surf beaches for wave conditions and timing.
  • Nusa Dua — Consistent right-handers in crystal-clear water.

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling

Bali's underwater world is extraordinary. The top spots:

  • Tulamben — The USAT Liberty, a WWII cargo ship sunk in 10-30 meters of water, is one of the world's most accessible wreck dives. Tulamben is also one of the hidden gems most tourists miss on a standard Bali itinerary.
  • Nusa Penida — Dive with mola mola (ocean sunfish) July–September and manta rays year-round.
  • Amed — Pristine coral gardens and Japanese shipwrecks accessible from the beach.
  • Crystal Bay — Dramatic underwater topography with soft corals and large pelagic fish.

Cycling: Downhill Through Villages

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience rural Bali. Start high in the volcanic highlands and cycle down through terraced rice fields, traditional villages, and coconut groves to the coast. Most tours cover 20-30km and require minimal cycling fitness. The scenery is extraordinary and the pace allows you to stop and explore.

ATV Quad Biking

Ride ATVs through Bali's jungle tracks, rice paddies, and river valleys. A fun, slightly muddy option for those who want adventure without the altitude. Good for groups and families with older kids.

Paragliding over Uluwatu

Take a tandem paragliding flight from the cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula and soar over the Indian Ocean. With an experienced pilot, you'll glide above Bali's dramatically terraced sea cliffs, past traditional fishing villages, and over the turquoise water below. No experience needed. Our Uluwatu area guide covers the full Bukit Peninsula.

Jungle Trekking in West Bali National Park

Bali's only national park covers 19,000 hectares of monsoon forest, mangroves, and savanna. It's home to the critically endangered Bali Starling, sea turtles, and large water monitors. Trek with a ranger through untouched forest and snorkel in the pristine reef at Menjangan Island within the park — also featured in our romantic Bali trip plan as a couples' escape. This is Bali at its wildest.

Sea Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Padang Bai, Candidasa, and Amed all offer calm, clear waters perfect for kayaking and SUP. Kayak around coastal caves, paddle past Hindu sea temples, and spot sea turtles in the shallows — an adventure accessible to all fitness levels.
